ダイアナ元妃（1961年07月01日〜1997年08月31日）は、キャサリンの義母に当たります。
キャサリンとは同じ未来の国王妃、という立場であったにもかかわらず、その生い立ちから結婚生活に至るまでダイアナはキャサリンとは真逆で、常に「悲劇的」であり、波乱に満ちた人生を歩みました。
ダイアナは、1961年に、裕福な貴族、ジョン・スペンサーとその妻フランセスとの間に、三女として生まれました。
しかし、父は三番目の子供に男の子を望んでいたので、ダイアナが生まれたことに失望したといいます。
そして、このことが、ダイアナの心の傷のいわば原点になります。
更に、6歳になると両親は離婚し、父方に引き取られたダイアナは母親との別離に苦しみ、また中の悪い両親の間で、不安定な生活を余儀なくされます。
これらの心の負担がきっかけで、摂食障害を発症しました。
イギリス中の令嬢が進学する寄宿学校にダイアナも入学し、学校生活を明るく活発に過ごしました。
未来の夫・チャールズと出会ったのは、1978年のことです。
この時ダイアナは、姉たちと共に、チャールズの誕生日パーティーに招かれていました。
それから間を開けて再び再会し、一気にチャールズの妃候補として名乗りを上げます。
ダイアナとチャールズが婚約したのは、1981年2月。
そして同年7月に、セント・ポール寺院で結婚式を挙げました。

Princess Diana (1st July 1961- 31st August 1997) is Catherine's mother-in-law.
Even though Diana was on the same position of the future queen like Catherine, Diana's life had been always tragic and tough through her birth and her marriage, truly contrary to Catherine's life.
Diana was born as the third daughter in 1961 to a wealthy aristocracy, John Spencer and his wife Frances.
However, it is said that her father was disappointed that Diana was born as he was expecting the son as his third child.
And, this became the original reason that Diana's feelings got hurt.
In addition, her parents divorced when she was 6 years old and she was committed to the care of her father, suffering from the separation from her mother. She was also forced to spend unhappy days among her separated parents.
She suffered from an eating disorder due to these stresses.
Diana entered the boarding school that young ladies in the United Kingdom attend and had enjoyed a school life actively.
She first met her future husband Charles, Prince of Wales in 1978.
At that time, Diana along with her sisters had been invited to Charles's birthday party.
Then she met him again after a while and became his potential bride immediately.
Diana and Charles were engaged in February 1981.
And they married in July 1981 at St Paul's Cathedral.
