ダイアナは王室に入る前から、王室が持つ威圧的な空気、また伝統に固執した堅苦しさに辟易していました。
婚約してバッキンガム宮殿で妃教育を受けるようになっても、その場で教えられる以外に、誰も王室でのしきたりやマナーについて教えてくれませんでした。
また、夫・チャールズは、古くからの友人であるカミラ・パーカー・ボウルズとの関係を婚約以後も続けていたため、ダイアナは夫に愛されることもなかったのです。
カミラは、妃候補としては不十分として、王室から受け入れられていませんでした。
そして、カミラはそのことを割り切り、愛人という立場を貫き、チャールズとの愛情関係を満喫していたのです。
ダイアナは、両親が離婚した家庭から来たお嬢様で、何よりも愛情に飢えていました。
しかし、夫の愛情も受けることなく、すぐに情緒不安定になります。
ダイアナは、昔から抱えていた摂食障害の問題をぶり返し、食べるだけ食べて後でトイレで戻す、ということを繰り返すようになりました。
そして、王室でのストレスも重なり、次第に自傷癖もついてしまったのです。
エリザベス女王は、ダイアナとチャールズの不仲やチャールズとカミラとの関係を把握していました。
それにも関わらず、「一切干渉せず」の態度を貫き、結局ダイアナの気持ちも汲み取ってもらえることはなかったのです。

A Solitary Royal Life
Before becoming a member of the royal family, Diana had been fed up with the oppressive atmosphere of royal family and also the formality that adheres to tradition.
Even when she received the education of princess at Buckingham Palace after her engagement, no one told her about the royal mores and manners except teaching her on the spot.
In addition, her husband, the Prince of Wales had kept the relationship with his friend, Camilla Parker Bowles even after the engagement, so Diana was not loved by her husband.
Camilla was not accepted from the royal family as she was inadequate as his potential bride.
And, Camilla has remained as his mistress and enjoyed the loving relationship with Charles.
Diana was a young lady whose parents divorced and felt hungry for affection more than anything.
However, she did not receive the affection even from her husband, so was depressed immediately.
Diana relapsed a eating disorder that she had for a long time and repeated to eat food and vomit it later in the toilet.
And also due to the double stress of the life in the royal family, she had developed self-injury behavior gradually.
The Queen knew the discord between Diana and Charles and the relationship between Charles and Camilla.
Nevertheless, she kept the attitude not to interfere with them and did not understand the feeling of Diana.
Then, Diana was isolated in the royal family and cornered.
