ウェストミンスター寺院は、960年に建立された大変古く、由緒正しい英国国教会で、1987年には世界遺産にも登録されています。

ウェストミンスター寺院では、歴代の英国王の戴冠式が行われてきた場所で、エリザベス現女王もまた、1953年6月2日にここで行われた戴冠式で、女王の座に就きました。

また、現在までに多くの王族の結婚式や葬式がウェストミンスター寺院で行われてきています。

今回、式を執り行ったのは、カンタベリー大司教です。

カンタベリー大司教は、英国国教会総本山であるカンタベリーに主教座を置く大主教で、英国国教会伝統の儀礼全般を執り行います。

ケイトとウィリアムの、未来の国王夫婦の婚礼を執り行うために、今回もカンタベリーからロンドンまでやってきました。

昨今は、英国国民の国教会離れが著しく、日曜礼拝に通う信者も人口の1％と言われています。

多民族国家になり、それと同時に多宗教を受け入れようになったのですから、キリスト教徒の数がほかの宗教に押されるのは仕方のないことだと思います。

それでもキャサリンとウィリアムの結婚式は、英国国教会の人気を挽回するための重要な儀式です。

英国国教会は、若い二人が伝統のある教会で伝統に則った婚姻の儀式を行うことで、信者数を再び伸ばし、教会の威信を回復することに繋げたい、という密かな目論みがあったようです。
