フィレンツェ時代
マールボロカレッジ卒業時、ケイトは「Aレベル」を獲得していました。
これは、どの大学にも進学可能なレベルです。
このことで、ケイトには未来に向けて選択肢が広がりました。
そして、マールボロカレッジを卒業すると、1年間のギャップ・イヤー（カレッジ卒業から大学進学までの猶予期間）を海外で過ごしました。
特に芸術に強い関心を抱いていたケイトは、最初に過ごす地にイタリアのフィレンツェを選びました。
フィレンツェに到着したのは、2000年9月のことです。
そこでケイトは語学学校の12週間のコースを取り、イタリア語の勉強に集中しました。
そして、時間があればフィレンツェ市街地を散策し、ルネサンス期の巨匠たちの偉大な作品を見て回り、夜は友達とワインを片手にカフェやバーでおしゃべりを楽しみました。
イタリアといえば、女性を誘惑し、愛を囁くイタリア人男性のイメージがありますが、ケイトはそれまで培ってきた慎み深さを貫き、言い寄る男性に目もくれなかったそうです。
総じて「お堅い」イメージが強い彼女ですが、実際の彼女はユーモアや笑いを愛する普通の女性、ただ思慮深く堅実で、芯の強い女性であっただけなのです。
そんなケイトをイタリアの人々は「英国の薔薇」と賞賛しました。
イタリア時代はケイトにとって、世界最高峰の芸術に包まれた至福の時間であり、人生で最も素晴らしい経験の一つになったに違いありません。

The Period in Florence
When Kate graduated from Marlboro College, she obtained "A-level".
This qualification is accepted to enroll in any universities.
This enabled her to gain more opportunities in her future.
Then, after she graduated from Marlboro College, she had taken a gap year abroad.
Kate was especially interested in art and chose Florence in Italy to spend for the first time.
She arrived in Florence in September 2000.
Kate took a 12-weeks course at the language school to study Italian.
Then she explored Florence when she had time and looked around the great works of the great masters of Renaissance, and enjoyed a chat in a cafe and a bar with friends, drinking wine.
It can be imagined that Italian men can be quite persuasive and seduce a woman, but Kate was modest and would not overreact to compliments.
Her image is serious overall, but indeed she is the general woman who loves the humor and laugh and she is just a thoughtful and has a backbone.
Italian people praised her as "Rose of England".
She was surrounded with the world best arts in Italy, which must have been one of the most wonderful experiences in her life.
