2004年3月、スイスのスキー場で休暇を共にしていたウィリアムとケイトの2ショット写真が、日刊紙「ザ・サン」に掲載されたのです。

このことは王室を激怒させ、チャールズ皇太子は、マスコミ各社にウィリアムが大学を卒業するまではプライバシーを保護するように働きかけ、紳士協定が結ばれました。

その後、二人はより一層公の場での振舞いに気をつけるようになりましたが、ケイトが父親にウィリアムを紹介したり、友人同士の間で恋人同士であることを話し始め、二人の関係は人々の知るところになったのです。
